What can you expect to experience on the South Tour of the Lutter cycle path?
Follow the tracks of the fish otter, find out whether brown water can be clean and how deconstructing a barrage dam can change a habitat. With a little luck you may encounter magical creatures and flying gemstones, or perhaps even the bearer of glad tidings…

about the “Lutter” nature protection project
Course of the South Tour of the Lutter cycle path
The South Tour of the Lutter cycle path along the heath brook Lutter also
starts at the car park in Bargfeld. It is located next to a
near-natural pond. The Schmalwasser brook with its waters browned by peat flows
through Bargfeld. The ecological disadvantages of pond farming are explained at
the former fish-pond area north-east of Bargfeld.
The South Tour then proceeds to a viewing platform at Postmoor. It continues via Eldingen and Luttern to the point where the rivers Lutter und Lachte converge near Jarnsen, known as Jarnser Paradise. The River Lutter is especially beautiful at this point, hidden away in the forest with a natural lake close by. With a little luck, you might be able to watch a kingfisher hunting for food. This is also the most southerly point of the tour.
The South Tour of
the Lutter cycle path returns via Hohnhorst, past Wohlenrode and
through Eldingen, where it takes a westerly curve and a detour
to Schaefermoor (Shepherd’s Moor) before progressing to Endeholz.
The rare tree frog lives here in a moorland forest. A little further to the
south lies a renaturated section of the river Lutter.
The tour then follows the Lutter to the north of Bargfeld. An
information board draws a comparison between drainage trenches and near-natural
brooks. You will then return to the starting point.
The South Tour of the Lutter cycle path is also very suitable for families
with children.
Characteristics
length: 28 km
Path conditions: The routes follow firm forest and field pathways, agricultural tracks and cycle paths adjacent to public roads.
Most of the cycle paths along the Lutter cycle tour are not paved. Some of the forest tracks can be dusty or muddy depending on the weather and therefore difficult to navigate by bicycle. If a larger group tour is planned, for instance a school class trip, then teachers and parents should check the condition of the paths in advance. But they are usually good...
Signposting: The pictogram shown here lines the entire route of both tours.
