The Devil's Bridge in Lüneburg sounds scary, but is located in a wonderful landscape.

The Devil's Bridge in Lüneburg

If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Lüneburg, you can take a long walk along the Ilmenau. A tour to the Devil's Bridge is particularly beautiful here.

Especially in spring and autumn, when the mist rises from the Ilmenau, it is quite mystical around the Devil's Bridge.

What sounds a little sinister in name is all the more beautiful to look at - the steel, greenish bridge with a length of 24 meters and a width of 1.90 meters is considered an important connection, especially for walkers. The river landscape and the forest area around it are a popular recreational destination for Lüneburgers of all ages.

The Teufelsbrücke was built in 1893/94, making it the oldest of the 58 bridges in Lüneburg. At the time, it was part of a beautification initiative by the Royal Chief Forester Hermann Busse. As part of this initiative, the entire Bockelsberg district was renaturalized and developed.

Why is it called the Devil's Bridge?

In the beginning, the Devil's Bridge was popularly known as the "Black Bridge", as the steel railings were originally painted black.

It is said to be called the Devil's Bridge because it crosses a former marshland that was called Düvelsbrook, or Teufelsbruch, in the Middle Ages.

There is an information board on site that tells you more about the bridge.
