The art collection in Lüneburg

The "Henning J. Claassen Art Collection" opened its doors on 1 September 2022, in the heart of Lüneburg. It comprises over 500 works of contemporary art. The focus of the collection is its breadth and international diversity of contemporary paintings, graphics and sculptures, which have been collected over the years by Lüneburg's entrepreneur and honorary citizen Henning J. Claassen.
Henning J. Claassen was born in Lüneburg in 1944. He trained as an industrial clerk and then studied economics and psychology in the USA. Back in Germany, he became self-employed at the age of 27 and founded successful companies. He became interested in modern art early on and began amassing a collection of 20th and 21st century paintings and sculptures. After selling his companies, he looked for a location for his art collection in Lüneburg. Most of it finally found its new home here, in the art collection in the centre of Lüneburg. A smaller part of the collection can be seen in Claassen's "Kunstgalerie Parkhotel de Wiemsel" in the Netherlands.
