Come and visit the municipality of Eicklingen situated in the south-east of the Celle region, compromising the districts Groß Eicklingen, Klein Eicklingen, Sandlingen, Schepelse, Neu-Schepelse and Paulmannshavekost.  Eicklingen belongs to the joint municipality of Flotwedel and was first mentioned in a document in 1196.

The “Horstgraben”, or “Hoste” separates Gross Eicklingen and Klein Eicklingen and converges with the river Fuhse. The Fuhse is about 500 metres away from the village center and separates Eicklingen from the neighboring municipality of Wathlingen.

Eicklingen, surrounded by its charming little villages, is to this day characterised by agriculture.

Paulmannshavekost is characterised by its unique landscape of hedgerows, interspersed with small woodlands. The hedges provide home and shelter for small animals and birds, create passageways and contribute to the variety of species in this scenic and charming environment. Here, you can admire the probably oldest storehouse of the Southern Heath.

Schepelse was once famous for its brick factory which, however, has since been shut down. The manually manufactured bricks were used for the restoration of various historical buildings and cultural assets. Here you can find the probably most attractive storehouse of the Southern Heath.

The name and the coat of arms

The town’s name stems from the German word "Eiche" (oak), so that a green oak tree with three golden acorns on silver background adorns the coat of arms of the municipality. The three golden acorns symbolise the three last independent communities: Gross Eicklingen, Klein Eicklingen and Sandlingen. A silver sword with a golden hilt and a golden scale hanging from it is the symbol for the former site of jurisdiction. The scale stands for the justice that was proclaimed in the former bailiwick. Eicklingen is one of 6 bailiwicks in the district of Celle.

WORTH A VISIT

The “Amtshof” (tithe house)

Remaining from the former administration and jurisdiction site is the Amtshof (tithe house). A classic farm house which was given its splendour at the beginning of the 19 century. This included wallpapers from Paris, huge stables, a prison, an apartment for the court usher and a baking house. Right opposite is the old village well. Opposite the tithe house is an old, small bell house which today stands empty.

After its reconstruction and full renovation, the “Amtshof” building holds the Lower Saxony information and competence centre for rural areas, a space for new ideas, business start-ups, young companies, but also engineering and planning offices with a focus on rural spatial development

The manor

The manor house is one of the most magnificent buildings in Eicklingen. Recently renovated, it is available for celebrations and for conference meetings. The estate “Klein Eicklingen” has been owned by the Proeve family for 18 years. The estate café, first opened in 2005, attracts many guests from Friday to Sunday.

With the permission of the duke, in 1318 a certain clergyman Conrad gave an estate which had been purchased for 91 Mark Bremen silver to the Calands Church in Altencelle.

Until the middle of the 17 century, the estate belonged to the lords of Mahrenholz. Duke Ernst, however, had promised the Mahrenholz estate to the brothers Heinrich and Jürgen von der Wense in 1534.

Antique Eicklingen

A former inn directly adjacent to the B214 coming from Celle on the right-hand side attracts many fans of antiques. There are rows and rows of sofas, tables, chests of drawers, seating corners, pictures, lamps and a lot more spread out over 1,000 square metres. All of these are real treasures from different periods and of different materials. The W&L Antiques Trading Company even furnishes hotels. Part of the furniture gallery is an antique café.

The myth of the St. Lucae chapel

There is a myth surrounding the St. Lucae chapel which is believed to have existed in Eicklingen. According to researchers who have studied the chapel's history, there are two possible sites:

One would be the estate of the Wense family (“Gutshof Klein Eicklingen”) or a place in the Wathlinger Feldmark near the little river Fuhse. Following its disappearance in 1531, the chapel remains an unsolved mystery.

OF SPECIAL INTEREST

In order to experience the exceptional close village community and team spirit among its inhabitants, you should visit the village during the “Schuetzenfest” (marksmen´s fair). This traditional festival only takes place every four years and puts the whole village into a state of exception. You will see hundreds of young marksmen marching through the village. In the evenings, the festival tent is completely packed, since the people of Eicklingen are famous for their culture of celebrating. The colourful parade on the Sunday of the fair is hard to top. 50 floats were counted in 2015 plus all the groups on foot in their elaborate costumes. The next fair will be in 2019 and the preparations are already in full swing.
