The tower of the largest cantilevered hall church in northern Germany stretches 50 metres into the sky. The large four-nave church in Hermannsburg was built as a church for missionary festivals.
Today, the largest independent Lutheran protestant congregation in Germany convenes here to worship. Two thirds of the region’s inhabitants split from the regional church when Theodor Harms, brother and successor to Ludwig Harms, was deprived of his office because he could not come to terms with the prescribed new wedding vows,. Hence the establishment of the independent protestant community here in Hermannsburg in 1878.
