Route length:
approx. 31 km

The route from
Lueneburg to Bardowick follows the historic tow path along the
banks of the River Ilmenau and features a wealth of historic sites.

TIP:

The old buildings
of the Nikolaihof served as a leper colony in the Middle Ages. Also
worth a visit: the Nikolai Church (1435) with the oldest
organ in Northern Europe and the Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul
in Bardowick.

A forest path
leads you to the picturesque village of St. Dionys. Numerous farm
buildings dating from the 17th To the 19th century bear witness to
Oldershausen’s turbulent past.

You can experience
the variety of nature on the next stage as it takes you through the Elbe
Marshlands in Winsen.

A short detour to
the bridge leading to the needle dam constructed in Fahrenholz in
1888 is worthwhile. Your journey continues towards Mover. You pass
through Toennhausen via an old dyke line, where the remnants of the
former course of the River Ilmenau are still recognisable. With Toennhausen
behind you, your route returns to the Ilmenau Canal.

The stretch along
the dyke is home to white storks, lapwings and many other bird species. It
takes you to Stoeckte and its old thatch-roofed houses. The
Ilmenau cycle path then guides you from Stoeckte Dyke to the Elbuferstrasse and
the Elbe cycle path. A varied selection of bars and restaurants awaits you
in Hoopte.

Your journey along
the Ilmenau cycle path ends with a view of the River Elbe from the ferry
terminal towards Zollenspieker (Hamburg).
