Places of interest on this stage of the Ilmenau cycle path

After visiting the town of Uelzen – including a viewing of the Hundertwasser Railway Station and the “Path of Stones” sculpture trail – continue north towards Lake Jastorf, the most important nature reserve for aquatic birds in the district of Uelzen.

Time for a picnic: You’ll find one of the region’s most beautiful heath areas, Klein Buenstorfer Heide, just before you get to Bad Bevensen. Situated between pine forests and valley meadows, it is home to one of the largest burial sites on Lueneburg Heath with a total of 59 burial mounds.

A friendly Neptune welcomes you at the entrance to Bad Bevensen Spa Gardens and beckons you to take a dip in the iodine brine spa. Five bridges lead you from the old town to the spa gardens. Numerous cycle paths in the gardens invite you to explore the surroundings.

Pick up the Ilmenau cycle path again and head towards Medingen Monastery. It is located two kilometres outside of Bad Bevensen and is one of the remaining active and inhabited monasteries. The monastery buildings and St. Mauritius Church represent an architectural highlight of the region and are definitely worth a visit.

A varied route then takes you towards Bienenbuettel with its historic town centre and the Michaelis Church. The picturesque heath village invites you to take a break and recover some energy.
