Main route

Route length: approx. 22 km

Before setting off on the main route of the Ilmenau cycle path in Bad Bodenteich, visit the museum in the former moated castle or the 400-Water-Barefoot Path for a brief journey back in time to the Middle Ages.

You are now following the River Aue, a headstream of the Ilmenau, as you cycle towards Wieren.

After a break at the renaturalised village ponds and the historic fieldstone church, your journey continues along the side channel of the River Elbe to one of the largest locks in Europe.

After cycling through a number of villages, you arrive in Uelzen, where the primary and various secondary routes of the Ilmenau cycle path merge.

TIP:

The “Path of Stones” in Uelzen shows that stones are not necessarily cold and lifeless. Visitors love the colourful mythical creatures and ancient gods that adorn the 21 rock sculptures created by artist Dagmar Glemme.
