Used by the military until the 1990s, today Schwindebecker Heath is an impressive example of the revitalization of heathland landscapes.

In addition to the open heath area awaiting you in Schwindebecker Heath, the other highlights include Schwindequelle, Luhetal and Soderstorf watermill.

Schwindequelle is one of the natural wonders of Lüneburg Heath. At 60 litres per second, this spring is thus the second source of water in Lower Saxony after the Rhumequelle in the Harz. At the spring head you can watch how the water from below pushes out of the sandy ground, forming sand fountains. Reddish iron oxides and turquoise manganese oxides are deposited here.

Through Luhetal you walk to Soderstorf watermill, dating from 1427. In its long history it was used by the millers as grain mill, oil mill, groat mill, bark mill, and saw mill. The watermill can only be viewed from the outside.

Note:

The Heath Panorama Path is a ‘‘stamped trail’’. In the stamp boxes you can discover exciting legends, fairy tales, and information about Lüneburg Heath. Collect the stamps in the ‘‘Amelinghausener Stepelpass’’. If you collect all the stamps in the stamp passport, you can get an Amelinghausen Heath certificate.
