The pilgrimage route continues along the River Aller, taking you through the Aller valley to Celle. The tower of St. Mary's Church of 1308, which can be seen from afar, points the way to the historic and well-preserved timber-framed old town. The castle chapel in the former ducal castle with original Renaissance furnishings from the 16th century is well worth a visit.
The royal city could have come straight from a fairy-tale. Take your time and enjoy the regal atmosphere of the royal residence, through whose streets the kings, dukes and princesses from the house of the Welfs once strolled. The residence city of Celle owes its charm to its romantic old town and its royal castle. The lovingly restored and listed half-timbered houses date back to the 13th century. Between them rise gabled timber-framed houses with impressive bay windows from the 16th and 17th centuries. Many houses are decorated with ornaments that tell you a lot about the house. The Hoppner Haus is one of the most magnificent of all the old buildings in the city of Celle. Six floors project one above the other in the gable. The lower floors are adorned with fantastic figurine ornaments and rich carvings.
You can obtain a stamp for your pilgrim’s pass from Celle’s town church "St. Marien". The construction of the three-aisled Gothic hall church coincides with the time the city was founded. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Hildesheim as St. Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) in 1308. If the church should be closed, you can obtain a stamp from the tourist office at the town hall (Altes Rathaus”).
