White-tailed eagles, ospreys, cranes, bitterns and otters - perhaps you've seen them on TV? But if you want to see them live, you have to make a detour to the Meißendorf Ponds nature reserve. These five animal species and many more have found their habitat in the Meißendorf Ponds / Bannetz Moor nature conservation project area. A landscape that has developed into an important refuge for rare and endangered animal and plant species.
The pond area represents an important replacement habitat for animal and plant species that have lost their habitat due to the regulation and straightening of the Aller and increasing agricultural use in the Aller lowlands.

The pond area is particularly known for its rich bird life. Around 130 breeding bird species, of which around 40 are endangered, and over 60 resting bird species have been recorded.

In addition, around 40 dragonfly species and over 400 butterfly species live there. The ponds are also home to a large number of different fish species, amphibians and reptiles. Overall, it is one of the most valuable wetlands in the state of Lower Saxony.

The Meißendorf ponds are a worthwhile destination if you are looking for tranquillity and a connection to nature. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty and tranquillity of the landscape:

From the circular hiking trail around the Hüttensee and its viewing tower on the southern shore, you can enjoy wide views of the nature reserve. We recommend taking binoculars with you.

Within the nature reserve, the animals should be able to live in peace and undisturbed, which is why it may not be entered. Coming from the south, hikers can also enjoy excellent views of the pond landscape from two observation towers. Information boards explain the wildlife of the ponds.

A hiking trail through the Meiße lowlands leads to a viewing hill, from where you can enjoy wide views of the lowlands and the renaturalized section of the Meiße.

The Sunder estate is now home to the well-known NABU nature conservation centre of the same name. There are many opportunities for information and further education.
