The hamlet of Ahlden (Aller), with its castle on the Alte Leine, was first documented as early as 1140. It was also the scene of a real tragedy - the people here will be happy to tell you the story of the Princess of Ahlden. Today, the castle houses an art auction house. The bible garden behind the Church of St. John the Baptist is worth seeing; it is open from May to September. Ahlden has many historical buildings and a well preserved “Scheunenviertel” [barn quarter] at the end of the village, all of which can be visited. Continuing on the tour, you cross the Aller in Eilte and cycle through an idyllic landscape of hedgerows in the direction of Bierde, where St. Veit’s Chapel is a good place to take a break; it also opens from May to September. From there, the path takes you through the Ahrendsheide forest to Hodenhagen, well known far for the Serengeti Park Hodenhagen. The game park is home to animals from five continents and opens from the end of March until the end of October.
