Fischbeker Heath

Fischbeker Heath Nature Reserve extends south of Hamburg between Fischbek and Neu Wulmstorf and covers an area of approximately 773 ha.

The well-known heathlands of Lüneburg Heath were created as a consequence of agricultural use in previous centuries. The areas which are today's nature conservation areas are typically the nutrient-poor sandy soils, where only a few plants thrive, such as birch and pine forests, and of course the main heathland plant – common heather (Calluna vulgaris).

Fischbeker Heath is worth a visit at any time of the year – whether in spring, when the first flowers are in bloom and the trees are first budding, in summer during the heather blossom, in the autumn months when the leaves show the most amazing colours, or in winter with the landscape covered with a white layer of snow. The paths in this part of the Heath meander through the hilly area, climbing slightly and then dropping down again.

Tip:

The northernmost stage (26 km) of the new Heidschnucken Trail leads from Fischbek to Buchholz in the North Heath, right through Fischbeker Heath. Also, if you do not want to go the entire distance, you can just follow it for a while and absolutely rely on the quality of the trails and the signage.

Also worth seeing is the Archaeological Footpath, which has 13 stops along its route from the bus terminus in Waldfrieden on Falkenbergsweg to the of the open-air school and the nature conservation information house "Schafstall" on Fischbeker Heideweg. The path began in the mid-1970s. In 2002, the burial sites were restored and the path was renewed and reopened.

If you are feeling adventurous, you can take a look at the gliding field of the Fischbek e.V. Gliding Club. Here you can fly in a glider at weekends and public holidays for only €35.00.

Directions:

At Scharlbargstieg in Fischbek there is a car park from which you can easily explore Fischbeker Heath Nature Reserve. The best way to get to Fischbek is via the A7, exit Hamburg-Heimfeld.
