Buckwheat - the tasty grain from the heath
Buckwheat tart is a speciality of Lueneburg Heath

Cultivated buckwheat once served the poor rural communities as an important source of nutrition. Today, buckwheat is considered a real delicacy!
Heath
Buckwheat is still cultivated on
Lueneburg Heath to this day, where its grain is used for delicious buckwheat
dishes. Buckwheat is not a cereal, but rather a member of the knotweed family.
The plants have stemmed, heart-shaped leaves and white-pink blossom. A field of
buckwheat in full bloom therefore looks like a white or reddish carpet and has
a wonderful scent. The name "buckwheat" or "beech wheat"
comes from its triangular seeds, which resemble the much larger seeds of the
beech nut from the beech tree, and the fact that it is used like wheat.
Culinary buckwheat delicacies
Buckwheat is used both in
traditional recipes and in today’s modern kitchen. Buckwheat tart from
Lueneburg Heath is a regional speciality. Thick buckwheat pancakes fried with
bacon or as a sweet variation are very tasty. Buckwheat waffles served with
fruit or vanilla ice cream are also delicious.
Buckwheat – the healthy treat
Buckwheat is considered as a
valuable source of nutrition rich in starch and protein. It does not contain gluten.
It is therefore the ideal alternative to cereal-based foods for people who
intentionally want to reduce their gluten intake or are
gluten-intolerant.
