The Uelzen lock group, consisting of Locks I and II, is located between Uelzen and Wittingen near the village of Esterholz on the Elbe Lateral Canal.

The lock series in Uelzen consisting of Locks I and II is situated near the town of Esterholz between Uelzen and Wittingen. The locks are another two impressive descent structures of the Elbe side channel (ESC) alongside the ship lift in Scharnebeck near Lueneburg.

The lock Uelzen I has counted among the largest inland waterway locks in Germany since 1973 on account of its lift heiht of 23 metres. The construction of the Uelzen II lock has significantly increased the capacity of the Elbe side channel since 2006. The two locks work independently of each, which permanently guarantees the operating safety of the lock series.

You can learn more interesting details about these fascinating technical structures in Lueneburg Heath on guided tours. The meeting point is at the information board in the car park of the “Esterholzer Schleuse” inn.
